In my experience, children tire quickly of houses built for them in the garden, but love the creativity of making their own dens. Leave a wild area for them to roam about in (the bottom corner of a small garden will do). Provide a variety of twiggy sticks, planks, and assorted wood and they’ll do the rest themselves.
