Choosing the site for garden, preparing the soil and educating yourself about plants you intend to grow is the key for success. Your vegetables and fruits should get at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight, obtain all the necessary nutrients for optimal growth from the soil as well as adequate moisture but quantity and quality of yield also greatly depend on successful pest control.

There are several different gardening methods from which greatly depends the amount of required work and the overall success. Which one to choose greatly depends on available space for a garden as well as from your personal view of an “ideal” gardening method.

As first, you can choose between conventional and organic gardening which probably do not require a special presentation. Besides choosing between artificial fertilizer or compost, mulch and manure you will also need to decide between conventional or natural approach to pest control which is virtually inevitable. Proponents of both methods often choose raised bed gardening, a form of gardening in which the soil beds are raised above the surrounding soil and are commonly enclosed by a frame to reduce the weeds.

The raised bed gardening is compatible with square foot gardening which is worth of considering if not having a lot of space as well as with companion planting, a form of gardening which bases on theory that the right combination of plants increases crop productivity because the plants assist each other in nutrient uptake, pest control, pollination, etc. Very interesting and intriguing is also the no-dig gardening method which was introduced by Japanese microbiologist Masanobu Fukuoka in the 1980’s.
